Delivering a $13.5bn expansion with Freeport LNG in Texas

Project overview
What does it take to build the UK’s next-generation energy supply?
Hinkley Point C is a twin European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) nuclear power station under construction in Somerset. It’s the UK’s most significant low-carbon energy project, and a vital part of the country’s push to reach its net-zero targets.
Once complete, the plant will generate enough clean energy to power around six million homes for at least 60 years.
The programme recently passed a major milestone, with the team using the world’s largest land-based crane to lift a 47-metre-wide dome onto the first reactor building. With the dome in place, the project has moved into the next phase – fitting out the station’s mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems.
A long-term partnership
We’ve supported Hinkley Point C since 2011. In 2015, EDF Energy appointed us to lead project controls under a 10-year framework. As the programme has evolved, so has our role – and we’ve adapted our support to meet new challenges and priorities.
Our experience on some of the UK’s most complex clean energy programmes meant we could mobilise quickly – setting up clear structures and coordinating the supply chain – critical factors for a project of this scale and significance.
Cutting carbon, creating opportunity
Hinkley Point C plays a key role in reducing the UK’s carbon emissions. Once operational, it will offset around 9 million tonnes of CO2 each year – making a major contribution to the nation's decarbonisation goals.
The programme is also creating long-term economic value. More than 3,800 UK companies are part of the supply chain, and the project is expected to support around 71,000 jobs by the time it is complete. EDF has invested £24mn in local training and education, supporting over 8,000 trainees and more than 1,300 apprentices.
